The film tells the story of the relationship between Thomas Mann, the Nobel Prize–winning author, and his daughter Erika Mann — an actress and writer. Set at the height of the Cold War, father and daughter embark on a difficult and emotionally charged journey in a black Buick through war-ravaged Germany — from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-influenced Weimar. For the first time since the war, Mann returns to his homeland after making the difficult decision years earlier to emigrate to the United States.
