A famous Polish journalist presents a problem for the powers-that-be when he displays his full political skill and knowledge on a television show featuring questions and answers on a world conference by a panel of journalists. His enemies take away his privileges when he is away. The shock of being “unwanted” parallels a deeper disappointment in his private life: his wife has an affair with a jealous young rival, and after 15 years of marriage and two daughters wants a divorce. She offers no explanations as he tries to untie these problems himself. All the moves he makes are the wrong ones. He takes on drinking heavily with students eager to attend his seminar after discovering the class has been canceled. The journalist, once suave and commanding, is reduced to silence.

Two of opera’s greatest artists return to the Met in Verdi’s gripping opera based on Shakespeare’s timeless tale of a scheming couple determined to seize power at any cost. Baritone Quinn Kelsey stars as the Scottish king haunted by the ghosts of those he murdered to claim the throne. Opposite him is soprano Lise Davidsen as Lady Macbeth, consumed by an insatiable thirst for power and destructive ambition.

Puccini’s thrilling drama set in the Wild West returns in Richard Jones’s first new production of the opera at the Met in 30 years. Soprano Vida Miknevičiūtė stars as Minnie, the tough yet warm-hearted saloon owner who finds love in the most unexpected place. Tenor SeokJong Baek plays a handsome outlaw who arrives in a remote mining town in California and steals her heart.

In 1600, the Holy Year, Michelangelo Merisi (1571-1610) established his position as an artist by presenting  two paintings that forever changed history of art and his own life: 'The Calling of Saint Matthew' and 'The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew".

Following her dazzling performance in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, soprano Nadine Sierra takes on the role of the seductive and passionate Manon in Massenet’s opera. In Laurent Pelly’s acclaimed production, she is joined by celebrated tenor Matthew Polenzani as Manon’s idealistic lover, the Chevalier des Grieux, and rising opera star Andrzej Filończyk as her loyal cousin Lescaut.

One of today’s greatest dramatic tenors, Brian Jagde, takes on the role of Otello, one of the most demanding parts in the operatic repertoire. Verdi’s masterpiece is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements of Italian opera. This monumental tragedy, inspired by Shakespeare, also stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Desdemona, baritone Artur Ruciński as the sinister Iago, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Cassio.
